John, I am jealous that you are undertaking such an adventure - I've only thought about something like this - but here you are actually doing it! If you get a chance pick-up Pirsig's book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (it is a lousy book about Zen and even worse about motorcycle maintenance - but it is a great book about a kid and his father taking a roadtrip across the US and their observations / experiences......
